The Deeper Truths Journalists Are Blind to | Global Research – Centre for Research on Globalization | John Swinton, who worked for the New York Times and in a toast before the prestigious New York Press Club in 1953, made this candid confession: identifying the problem facing mankind in these times, concerning mainstream media. “There is no such thing, at this date of the world’s history, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. “If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell the country for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly this is toasting an independent press. We are the tools and vassals of the rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes. When the evils of human bondage once before confronted the conscience of United States of America, a courageous writer, William Lloyd Garrison, began publishing a newspaper called THE LIBERATOR ; and in the first issue of this crusading paper, in 1831, he wrote: I am aware that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not a cause for severity? I will be as harsh as the TRUTH, and as uncompromising as JUSTICE. On this subject, I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. No! No! tell a man whose house is on fire to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his wife from the hands of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe from the fire into which it has fallen — — but urge me not to use moderation in a cause like the present! I am in earnest – – I will not equivocate – – I will not excuse – – I will not retreat a single inch – – and I will be heard”.
